I must have sneezed
On knees I freeze
I mean I just choked up

Bruce sat up in bed, dragging a hand down his face to mop away the sweat. He'd had another nightmare, which was no surprise. They were fairly sporadic, but when he started getting them, they tended to plague him for weeks. Bedraggled, his eyes sought the digital clock on the dresser. Her dresser. It was about 3:20 A.M., meaning that he had barely slept for an hour between nightmares this time. Someone stirred beside him, pulling his attention away from the fuzzy memories in his head. She looked so delicate when she slept, moonlight shining in from the window dappling her chest and torso as she slept.

Somehow I slept
I dream, I mean
I dreamt of nothing
Able to breathe
A sweet relief
Now that you're here with me

It had been complete chance that she had found him this time. Bruce had traveled back towards Culver University, just to check up on her, and seeing that she was alive and well, had intended to depart once more without ever alerting her to his presence. Maybe it was dumb luck that she had been driving on the road that he had just happened to be walking along, her headlights illuminating him through the rain. Thinking him homeless and taking pity, she had opened the door and offered him a ride. Recognition slapped both of them in the face as he turned, and before he could register what was happening she had her arms around him and was burying her face into his chest, heedless of the rain that was soaking them. "Please.. Don't go," Betty had whispered.

A northern degree
Dove into me
Now I'm recovering

Now they  were in her house, having fallen asleep on her bed together, marveling at one another in the dark until sleep claimed them. Neither could believe the other was actually there; for a long time they had just sat holding one another. Of course it couldn't have gone any farther than that. He couldn't get too excited. The thought of kissing her and having to stop because of him caused Bruce's brow to furrow.

I only want you to see
My favorite part of me
And not my ugly side
Not my ugly side

As much as Bruce loved her, he would never allow him to take it that far. Never put her in that dangerous situation. Never hurt her. It killed him that they were so close and yet so far apart- worlds away from each other. Even when everything was fine, he always had the other guy lurking over his shoulder, just waiting to screw everything up. Some would call it a gift, or a miracle. Those people didn't understand, could never understand. The terrible rage that would surge up and blind him, washing everything in green until he lost himself. He was terrified of ever hurting her by accident, and so therefore he could never be what Betty wanted. She said she understood, but he could see it in her eyes when he had to draw back, the heart rate monitor on his athletic watch beeping away for all it was worth.

Hook up a C.B. Wave a way
For conversation flow
I'm shoved in your cave, to wage this rage
Don't let me go

Hesitating for a moment, the scientist reached out a hand and gently moved a strand of hair out of her face. She stirred very briefly, but otherwise did not awaken, both to his relief and dismay. God, she was gorgeous when she slept. No, not gorgeous. Just beautiful. She had a distinct beauty about her that made his heart flutter every time he saw her. The thing that amazed him was, she seemed to love him just as much as he loved her. But they really couldn't be together. Bruce was constantly on the run, with no real connections to anyone or anything except her. She had a life and friends, not to mention a career and reputation. He could never ask her to leave all that for him, even if she insisted on coming along. Life on the run was difficult, and something he never wanted her to endure. Frowning slightly, he leaned forward and grasped the covers, pulling them up and carefully draping them across her shoulders. They had slipped down while she slept. Once again, she did not stir.

A kick and a scream is all that seems
To mean a lot thus far
I won't let you on my stage, my page
You can't know
Yet you have to know

Bruce considered getting up and walking away. Just leaving her behind once again, yet leaving her safe. She would never see him again. But he couldn't bring himself to break her heart again. Betty deserved much better than him, though she continually expressed her love. For him to walk away with no explanation and no goodbye would be cruel. It would render her broken. As much as he hurt her just by being on his own and causing her worry, he couldn't do this as well. Laying back down, he eased himself onto his side and contented himself to watch her sleep. Save for the steady rise and fall of her chest, she was motionless. It brought a faint smile to his lips; seeing her so calm and unaffected by the chaos that consumed them in the waking world. Perhaps he would leave in the morning, or later, but he owed her a reason. And a goodbye. His breath caught as she stirred, blinking sleepily at him and smiling warmly. "Is something wrong?" She murmured, her voice soft as she was clearly still half asleep. Bruce just smiled and caressed the side of her face, hiding his troubles. "It's nothing. Go back to sleep," he replied eauallh quietly, sharing her gaze until she drifted back to the warm depths of sleep.

So calm... and now it's dark
I look for you to light my heart
I'm in between the moon and where you are
I know... I can't be far.
Canon of Bruce Banner, though the idea is mine. This didn't actually happen (to my knowledge) in any of the comics, tv shows or movies.
